Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

Figure 12-10:Having a video conversation in Windows MessengerUsing Remote AssistanceRemote Assistance is a special feature of Windows Messenger where you canhave a typing, voice, and/or video conversation going on. But you can alsoturn control over to a trusted expert. The expert can then see your screen onher screen. And she can work your computer using her own keyboard ormouse. This is why we use the term trusted expert. You wouldn t want to turnyour computer over to a crook or knucklehead. Unfortunately, there aren t any free experts floating around, helping peoplewith they re computers. The only trusted expert you re going to be able to getis someone you know and who (you can hope) knows a lot about computers. be your son or daughter, brother-in-law, or computer guy at the office anyone with a Windows XP computer and an Internet account. Remote assistance is definitely slow if either party has a dial-up account. Leave the video off, and maybe even the voice up, to free up bandwidth forall the other activity involved in controlling your computer from afar. Starting a Remote Assistance SessionStarting a Remote Assistance session is a lot like starting any other conversa- tion. First, your trusted expert needs to be online. If you re already in aConversation window with the person, click Ask for Remote Assistancein thesidebar of the Conversation window. Otherwise, in Windows Messenger s mainwindow, right-click the online contact who ll be your trusted expert, andchoose Ask for Remote Assistance. Either way, a Conversation window opens, and an invitation is sent to the recipient. If the recipient accepts the invitation, you ll get some feedback to that effect. Then it will take a while to get your screen over to the expert s screen.

Twenty-First Century Toll-Free VideophoneYou can (Web hosting companies) update your toll-free

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

Twenty-First Century Toll-Free VideophoneYou can update your toll-free Windows Messenger voice communications tovoice plus live video, provided you have a Web cam. A Web cam is a small, inexpensive digital video camera that doesn t record video. Rather, it just sitson top of your computer monitor and shows your face live to the person withwhom you re conversing in Windows Messenger. Video communications work best with broadband Internet connections, suchas cable or DSL. You can still use a Web cam with a dial-up account and modem, but the picture won t be as smooth as, say, regular TV. The video will look a lit- tle jerky, like pictures sent from astronauts in the early days of the space pro- gram. But not a big deal you can still see and hear each other. If you ve never seen or heard of a Web cam, you can check out some availableproducts at any computer store or large office-supply store. Optionally, youcan go to any online store that sells computer stuff and search for Web Cam. You don t need anything particularly fancy, though. Any USB Web Cam compat- ible with Windows XP will do. A few models have built-n microphones, whichsaves you from having to install both a microphone and the camera. Once you ve installed a Web cam, you can start a video conversation withsomeone in the same way that you start a voice conversation. That is, if you realready in a typing conversation with someone, you can just click Start Videoto turn on your Web cam. If you re not already in a conversation with some- one, open Windows Messenger, right-click any contact who is online, andchoose Start a Video Conversation. The recipient will get an invitation that heor she can accept or decline. If the recipient accepts, you ll automatically getboth voice and video once the connection is made. Once you re in a voice and/or video conversation, as in Figure 12-10, you canuse the Speakers and Microphone sliders to adjust the volume of your conver- sation. If you re having a bad-hair day, and don t particularly want to be show- ing it off on your Web cam, you can click the Stop Camera button on the rightside of the Conversation window to keep talking without sending your videoimage.

This is easy to do: .If you re already having a conversation with someone in theConversation window and want to switch to voice, click Start Talkingin the Conversation window. .If you re not already in a typing conversation with someone, openWindows Messenger normally. Then right-click the name of the Onlinecontact you want to talk to and choose Start a voice conversation. The contact will receive a message that you re ready to talk and willreply if ready. The recipient will get a text message that shows your name followed by . . . would like to have a voice conversation with you. Do you want to Accept (Alt+T) or Decline (Alt+D) the invitation? You ll then get some feedback as to whetherthe recipient accepted or declined. Assuming the person accepted, you canjust start talking. To adjust the volume of the other person s voice, drag the Speakers slider leftor right under the Stop Talking heading (see Figure 12-9). Toll-Free TalkingIf you re not a big fan of typing messages, you can communicate with otherWindows Messenger users by voice. But you ll need one extra piece of com- puter hardware to do that a microphone (and speakers, to hear what theother person is saying). If you don t have a microphone for your computer, youcan buy one at any computer store. Microphones that you wear on your headare generally better than the ones you just set on your desktop, because hav- ing the microphone close to your mouth helps cancel out all the backgroundsound in the room. Telex Communications makes several USB microphone headsets that youmight want to check out next time you re shopping online or at a computerstore. USB is good, because it means you just have to plug it into your com- puter to use it. There s no complicated installation to go through. The firsttime you use your microphone, you ll need to run the Audio Tuning Wizard toget the best performance from Windows Messenger. Here s how: 1.Open Windows Messenger, if it isn t already open, by double-clickingthe Windows Messenger icon in the Notification Area or by clickingthe Start button and choosing All Programs.Windows Messenger. 2.From the menu bar in the Windows Messenger window, chooseTools.Audio Tuning Wizard. 3.Follow the instructions that appear on each page of the Wizard. Clickthe Next button after completing each page. 4.When you get to the Wizard page that asks which microphone andspeakers you want to use, you probably won t need to change theSpeakers option. But you should definitely click the drop-down listfor the Microphone option and choose whichever microphonedescription best describes the microphone you ll be using. For exam- ple, in Figure 12-8, I selected Telex USB microphone as my Microphone; that s the type of microphone I have plugged in to my computer. The whole path is a hyperlink. Soif you just click that, the file will open in whatever program is appropriate forthat file type. If you miss the opportunity to click the link in the message, choose FileOpen Received Files from Windows Messenger s menu bar to open thefolder where all your received files are stored. If you want to see (who is online) (Email web hosting)

Friday, July 20th, 2007

If you want to see (who is online) without being seen, set your status Offline. You ll be able to see who is online. But everyone else willthink you re offline. Regardless of your status, you can still see who is online at the moment byopening Windows Messenger. If you want to disconnect altogether, right-clickthe same Windows Messenger icon in your Notification Area and choose SignOut. You won t be logged in to your .NET Passport anymore. All your contactswill see you as Not Online. To get back online to communicate with your contacts, you ll need to right- click the Windows Messenger icon in your Notification Area and choose Sign in . . . from the menu that appears. Transferring Files and PhotosWhile you re in a conversation with someone, you can send files to each other. Unlike e-mail, which tends to put a limit on the size of the file you can attach message, there really is no size limit on transferring files in a conversation. Of course, the larger the file, the longer it will take to transfer, especially ifeither party in the conversation is using a dial-up connection. STEPS:Send/Receive Files in a Conversation1.If you haven t already done so, start a conversation with the personto whom you want to send a file. 2.Click Send a File or Photounder I want to…in the Conversation win- dow s sidebar. 3.The Send a File… dialog box that opens is the same as an Open dialogbox, in the sense that you first have to get to the folder that containsthe file(s) you want to send. For example, to send a picture from yourMy Pictures folder, choose My Documents from the Look In drop-downlist; then double-click My Pictures in the main pane. 4.Double-click the file you want to send. 5.The recipient gets an invitation to accept the file. If the recipientclicks Accept, the file will be transferred. Assuming you re the sender of the file, there s nothing left to do. The file istransferred and that s the end of it. If someone sends you a file using this method, you ll be given the option toAccept or Decline the transfer. When you choose Accept, the file will be copiedto your computer; then you ll see a message like the one shown in Figure 12-7.
