Copying Files from CDs and DVDsYou can copy files and folders from CDs using any of the techniques describedin Chapter 19. For example, let s suppose someone sends you a CD containinga bunch of pictures he or she took. If you just want to look at the pictures, youcan leave them in the CD and just browse through them using the Thumbnailsor Filmstrip view in Windows Explorer. But if you want to touch them up in agraphics program, you ll want to copy them to your hard disk first perhapsto your My Pictures folder or to a new subfolder you create within MyPictures. To copy files from a CD or DVD: If you re trying to install a program from a CD, copying files in this mannerwon t help. Programs need to be installedon your computer, not copied computer. But it will sound like The Chipmunks. When you listen to an audio CD, or watch a DVD using your computer, you wantit to play at normal speed the speed we refer to as 1X. If it plays any faster, you ll get The Chipmunks or a fast-motion version of your movie. But whenyou re just copying files to or from a disk, there s no music to hear, no movie towatch. You don t care if copying happens faster than normal 1X speed. In fact, the faster the better on those; it means less waiting. The numberX rating describes how quickly the drive can copy files and createCDs. For example, if the drive has a 1X speed, it will take 75 minutes to create a75-minute audio CD. A drive of 2X can create a 75-minute CD at twice the nor- mal speed. Hence, it will take 1/2 as long or about 37.5 minutes. A 24X drive cancreate the CD in 1/24th the amount of time about 3 minutes rather than 75minutes.

.If the CD you inserted contains a program, an installation programwill start. Copying Files to Floppy and Zip DisksCopying files to Zip and floppy disks is virtually identical to copying files fromone folder to another. You just have to know how much stuff you re about tocopy to the disk, because the capacity of the disk will be limited (verylimited, in the case of a floppy). To see exactly how much space is currently availableon a Zip or floppy disk, follow these steps: STEPS:Copy Files to a Floppy or Zip Disk1.If you haven t already done so, insert the disk you want to copy filesto and open My Computer. 2.Right-click the icon that represents the drive into which you justinserted the disk and choose Properties. 3.In the Properties dialog box that opens, the numbers next to FreeSpace show you how much space is available on the disk.
